About TallowFuel

Carl Bernofsky

As a retired professor of biochemisty, my interest in photosynthesis-derived sources of energy was rekindled when I evacuated New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and took an apartment in Shreveport, Louisiana, that had mature Chinese tallow trees growing in its backyard.  For several years, I observed the growth of these trees and collected samples from their remarkable output of energy-laden seeds.  In a series of backyard experiments, I was impressed with the vigor of their combustion.

I fully understand the complexities of bringing to completion a successful demonstration project that does not simply involve the manufacture of biodiesel, which is the current trend in the conversion of agricultural products into readily marketable liquid fuels.  I have a different objective in mind.  Long term, the world is headed for the depletion of fossil fuels and the conflicts that will arise over access to their dwindling availability.  It seems clear that future energy demands will increasingly depend on renewable sources of energy, and on electricity in particular because of its widespread, non-polluting and relatively uncomplicated means of distribution.  It is to this issue that this Web site is addressed.
